With Some Changes.HELLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ARCYCLERS!!

Did you miss ARCycling? Did you? DID YOU?

(I'm assuming you all just shouted YESYESYES!)

But listen. Things are different now. And here's how:

This time around, JUST GABY is running the show. So be patient with me, dear ones.

Instead of doing ARCycling once a week, I'll be running it ONCE A MONTH, usually the FIRST Sunday of the month BUT this is subject to change based on Gaby's schedule.

This month, however, ARCycling will be taking place on the SECOND Sunday of the month. This is because today is the 1st and Sunday is the 5th and I don't think that's enough time for the amount of donations I think you'll all provide if given the chance.

There will be NO time outs or mandatory reviews. If you request two books one month, you can request two books the next month. If you write reviews, don't write reviews, whatever, I don't care. I'm just one person and I don't have time to keep up with all the things, so run, my pretties, run and have books and fun.

ARCycling is still only for US/Canada. Not all books will be available for Canadians. Those books will still be noted in BLUE on THE LIST.

Everything else pretty much runs the same. Check the pages for the specifics, donate some books and be back her on Sunday, October 12th, 2014 for our first session post-hiatus! The exact time of the session will be posted on Twitter the day of, so go follow that Twitter and keep yourself up to date!

Now that you have all the basics, you should go read up on the rules, found in the "What's Going On Here?" tab. Then you should go to the ARC Donation Form tab and DONATE THOSE ARCS. Because we can't have a session without ARCs. And since I'm giving everyone an extra week to get their donating acts together, I expect things from you. (No, I don't really, but please? kthnxbai)

That's it. If you have any question, shoot them at me on Twitter or send me an email at arcycling@gmail.com!

If you're reading this, this most likely means you are a fan of us, whether donator or requester. And if you're a fan of us, you might have been aware of some of our failures and shortcomings the past few months. Frequent cancellations, emails getting forgotten -- in fact, I think one week we all three forgot it was even Sunday until it was Monday. Oops.

Despite my ridiculously busy life, I have to say I am AWARE of this. I haven't always been able to fix it, but I've been aware. And it's just come to the point, where I've decided to temporarily shut down ARCycling rather than continue our suffering. Lili and Gaby regrettably agree on this point.

Now, to answer the questions that will invariably come:

Wait. WAT. When will you open again????????????????
Er, not sure, friend! Could be a few weeks or maybe even a few months, but the point is that all three members are just too busy to run ARCycling efficiently and BELIEVE ME, it's better have to a hiatus-ed program than a hot mess of a program. We know when we are beat. See above white-flag waving gif.

I donated books, what happens to them?
I'll be sending out emails today, but we release your books back to you. Any donated books that you've currently submitted will be cleared from our records. If/ when we decide to open again, we'll put out a call then.

What happens to the Two Week Time Out/ time restrictions? Do they hold?
Uh, no. If/ when we open again, no one will be on time out. That would be ridiculous.

Should I still submit reviews?
YES. PLEASE. Be SURE to tweet us with links so we have away of recording them immediately. We might be closed for the moment, but we still appreciate the shiny reviews!

So... this means I still have to review the books I have?

Well, this is depressing. Can we have some gifs like the good old days to make us feel better?
ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY. There's always time for gifs. I'll even go into my gif vault for you guys.

What you guys HAVE to be like with us at this point. But no, really.

*I could apologize for the amount of Dan and Phil gifs in this post, but I won't. If you know who they are, then you know why it was needed. If not, I warn you, they are nothing but internet holes. Don't fall for their cute, innocent British boy faces.
Between Lili's college and Jennifer's three jobs, things were falling through the cracks. Oops.

So Jennifer went a huntin'... I mean... recruiting. The search was short. Gaby! Who is Gaby? Well, she's this chick on Twitter and this her blog, Queen Ella Bee Reads! And actually (surprise, surprise) she co-ran yesterday's session with Lili and wasn't scared off by you lot! She even called it 'fun'! Mad woman.

We're still working this new triumvirate out from week to week, but this means we'll have email responses out faster and widget updated more. Jennifer's been really dropping the ball on that. Sorry.

This means less stress for Jennifer and Lili.

And more results for you guys:

Now, everyone celebrate the adding of Gaby! The 3rd ARCycling girl. Her stick figure will be coming soon!

REQUESTERS

If you get your request in immediately, odds are that you will get a response the way the program is normally run

If you get it in late, you will most likely get a response really late into the night (we're talking anywhere between 11 and 2) if not Monday morning

The list will close really late Sunday night so everyone has a chance to get to it

DONATORS

Your e-mails will go out any time between late Sunday night and early Tuesday. We have to do it when we have the free time, you know? We will do them all at once and always announce on twitter when they are complete.

In some instances they will be done on time if either of us manage to be free

Hope that clears up any questions!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-52574324026854724812013-09-14T00:41:00.000-04:002013-09-14T00:41:02.348-04:00Updates!What with Lili being busy at college and Jennifer working 3 jobs (yes, yes, I'm awesome, I know it) ARCycling is going to have to be shifted. SLIGHTLY.

Things are going to run pretty much the same as always, open, close, books-free-for-all, etc. but it's those emails, man. Those emails. They kind of take forever. You wouldn't think so, but they do. So from now until further notice, emails might be going out a bit later than usual.

The emails to people who got books are quick and easy enough, they should go within the same time frame, but Donators, you awesome people, you. You will be getting them any time from Sunday night to Tuesday, at the very latest. This is to allows us a little wiggle room with our tight schedules.

Anyway, that's all!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-56109552191681057972013-08-29T03:17:00.001-04:002013-08-29T03:27:38.581-04:00ARCycling is cancelled for 9/1/13!Sorry! That's life!
This does NOT count towards Two Week Time Out. Basically So, if you were to get off this week, you get off next week. If you were to get off next week, you actually get off the week after. Wherever you currently are in your time outs, push it back a week. All donations will be held to next week.

Sorry again!

Now to explain why, Jennifer is working (dull) and Lili, well, Lili is moving in for her freshman year of college!! So while she hasn't abandoned us (yet) for the wild college life, let's start her off in the only way ARCycling knows how to do. Gifs.
Always.
Gifs. Always.

So as someone who's been there, done that, here we go.

First, Lili's gonna be all:

Then she's going to realize college is different than high school:

Especially when she sees those textbook prices:

Then inevitably, this happens to just everything:

Then finals come... oh yes...:

But the most important thing, is to have a party:

And make friends:

And learn some stuff:

And, finally have a blast in Manhattan:

Stay tuned for any planned service changes to ARCycling in the coming weeks as we adjust to have a college student in our midst. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-62946636134196136592013-07-24T20:22:00.001-04:002013-07-25T21:40:18.802-04:00Guess. What. It's been a year. We are a year old. A year. 12 months. 52 weeks. 365 days. 8760 hours. 525600 minutes.

Okay, a year give or take your definition, but for sure a year that this blog has been open.
Now it's stats time.
In that year, we got to 600 followers. We've had over 800 books given a second, or third chance at life. We've had 250 reviews that wouldn't have existed otherwise. We've had over 200 unique donators. This is all so happying.

And do you know what that means? GIF TIME.
So lately I've rejoined the world of popular things by finally watching Sherlock, Avengers and the solo movies that led up to it and before that Star Trek. So, we're just gonna have a big crazy fandom explosion of all of these things. Get ready for your computer to be loading for like 10 minutes, like the old school days of AOL dial up.*
*Jennifer just dated herself a whole hell of a lot. Dang.

When someone (or me) gives me the idea for a gif post:
Cannot TELL YOU how excited I was to find that gif set.
But anyway, yeah, don't freak out. Here's why:
1) A lot of those who donate, hardly ever request. Don't ask me why that is, I've just noticed the trend.
2) A lot of the time the people who donate, don't go for the big titles anyway. Not always, just, again, a strangeish trend I've noticed.
3) It won't be a preferred treatment, like holding books for anyone or especially rescinding books after emails have gone out. No way.

Will this be a big shift in everything we know and trust in this reality? No.
Does it mean you might loose out to the donator who requested the same book 15 seconds after you? Maybe. (You'd be surprised how often this happens anyway when people request when they are on TWTO unknowingly.)
Do I hope for a big influx of cast-off books from your school reading list just to get preferential treatment? Oh, gods of Olympus, I sincerely hope not. Yes, we'll take Pride and Prejudice, but the day any blogger tries to play this off as a hip and fun read is gonna get a big eyeroll from me. I'm an English major, I can say it.

I've worked hella hard on this blog (and all the spreadsheets) to watch it die so easily. Even with me moving and maybe starting some kind of life and Lili going to college, we are willing to keep it going. But we can only do so much. We need you guys! I hope this gets a little more life pumping in the system and if not, well, back to the drawing board on our side.

But first we need some gif-worthy news right? Well. I just so happen to HAVE SOME.

Jennifer IS moving. And it's not to LA. LA fell through like the gods themselves were telling me this was a bad idea.

Instead, Jennifer is gonna party it up in New York City *said all Pace Picante commercial style*.
You remember this if you were a child of the 90s.

And guess what. I have a place and a date and hopefully my retail job transfers and few friends and I'm really excited... it might turn out HORRIBLY, but this is what your mid 20s are for. Screwing up.

Now for the excited gifs.

And lastly, and maybe the best by far...
[link] I can't find the exact link, but that's the link to the amazing artist's Tumblr, if you like Percy at all you need to familiarize yourself with Burdge's fan art. Seriously.

Don't even judge me for this. One thing I've learned in my years on this planet, life is too short to be afraid to love the things you want to love. I apply that to lots of things, including my Percy Jackson fan status. Whatever.

Anyway, over the years of my enthusiastic love, I've collected a number of treasures, including, but not limited to, a Son of Neptune promo poster (and you bet your butt I laminated it) and the prize jewel, a Mark of Athena promotional cardboard dump from the bookstore I work at. Perks of being friends with the lead of the Children's Department. However, I might have acquired too much stuff.

It doesn't help that I live in Austin, Texas. Rick Riordan lives in San Antonio, Texas. His launch parties are always in Austin. So there's always lots of signed stock floating around. And I might have purchased an extra signed Sea of Monsters (#2) and Titan's Curse (#3) on a complete spontaneous impulse. Oops. And I might have ended up with an extra promotional Heros of Olympus "water bottle" that was given out by Disney Hyperion. Oops. So, uh, yeah, those things are going to be given away here and now.

Rules? There are none. Anyone can enter! Okay, your dog can't enter, but humans alike can. You don't have to have a status of blogger, teacher or otherwise. And oh, Hades, why not make this international too?

But let's make this fun. And nerdier.
For an extra entry, ask yourself if you can name all of the characters in the first picture. This is all on the honor system for this one.
For extra entries, you're going to tweet something ridiculous. That's all I'm saying.
For extra entries, comment on this post with your favorite Percy(-based) book if you've read them, if not, then which Greek god/ goddess would be your godly parent.
Kinda.I've spent the last 4 days going over the Review Archive and my long, long, LONG list of Requesters. I mean, the entire thing. Admittedly, I'd let this go too long, but whatever, life is busy. However, what I discovered didn't make me a happy monkey. I knew the review return rate was bad, better than it used to be, but I wasn't looking at concrete numbers. Now I have.

What was I doing? Stalking the crap out of you all. Basically.
But more specifically, if you've ever requested and gotten a book, I went to your blog, looked in your Review Archive or searched (if you had a search bar) for whatever book you got to if you happened to have the review and merely forgot to tell us.
This accrued about 10 reviews. So kudos to you lot for telling us about the reviews! However, less kudos to the kajillion more times I didn't find the book. It got a little painful to see all of the "IMM"s and "STS"s, therefore acknowledging you got the book, but then no review (and I'm not talking from last week. I mean, like from September).
Anyway, I suffered searching through very easily 200 blogs. All of this turned my brain in pudding.

I have suffered, so I'm going to make all of you suffer. A little. Nothing martyr-like.
Let's go over some basic reminders. These should be obvious, but ya know, if I have one piece of sage advice from my close to a quarter of a century on this planet, it is this: never assume anything.

The books available here are NOT for blind grabbing. Yes, I know they go fast, but there's a reason we list books like: Catching Fire (#2), then over to the right it would say Hunger Games #2. That means it's a sequel. That means if you haven't read the first, why would you want the sequel? Same goes for the genre and other obvious reasons, if you don't like dystopias and you look up Hunger Games on The Goodreads and it says dystopia, don't pick it. This means:

Saying you confused the book you got with another book and therefore not wanting to read it, is not going to fly. I'm going to say 'you've made your bed, now you must lie in it'. Like some kind of Disney villain.

Getting a sequel and saying you didn't realize it and therefore won't review it, is not going to fly. Like... HOW? The series number is right next to the title. How do you miss that?!

The books available here are NOT for you to NOT review then giveaway on your site. Guys, I went to college, I'm not stupid. If I know you got an ARC of Matched and a few weeks later you're giving away an ARC of Matched, I mean come on. I can put two and two together. I hardly ever (never) ban people myself, but when I saw this (yes, this actually happened) - INSTA-BAN. If you review it, I could not care less what you do with it after, but that? That's just insulting to me and my hardwork.

The books available here are NOT just so you can have the physical version of a book you read on NetGalley. No. If I go to your blog, search for the book and find you thank NetGalley (especially if your review is dated from before you got the book from me), I will take your review, put the link on my site as though it were meant for me. You're cheating my system, so I will use your review to up stats. So there. You want a physical book to own? Go to a freaking Barnes and Noble! This might also end in a banning if I see it happen much more.

All of that being said, I hate changing rules. It's a headache even for me and it just sucks. So we aren't going to change the rules... YET. But I have decided to do something I've debated for a long time.
Public humiliation.

As the rules stand now, Requesters can get up to five books with no reviews before going on a temporary ban until something gets reviewed. If I'm being honest, I'd love to tell you all that I want to shorten that to 3 books. I do. But first I guess I'd have to discuss that with Lili first. Boo.

What the below spreadsheet shows is everyone who has 3 or more reviews pending.
If you have 3 titles next to your name: This is more of a warning shot.
If you have 4 titles next to your name: A warning shot across your nose.
If you have 5+ titles next to your name: You are temporarily banned. Most of you guys who have 5 titles already know this.

The list is sorted by first name, then blog name. Titles are arranged by date received, earliest on the bottom.*
*Only exception is one group blog that has accrued 7 books with no reviews, that one is by blog name with the individuals listed.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO REQUESTS FROM AFTER THE END OF JANUARY. Why? Because I'm not a monster. There's a 2 month window to allow for delivery and reading time. Even if you requested a book from February until this last Sunday, it's not on there because it's not 'due'.

Now I'm sure you big Requesters are all, well, excuse me, but why aren't you going after the small time Requesters? Oh, oh I will. Over the next few weeks gentle 'reminder emails' are going to start floating around. If I was to list everyone here, that would take me many, many, many more hours and guys, I like to pretend I have a life even if I don't.

If ANYONE has questions about books they got, reviews or if you think you're supposed to be here and aren't, feel free to email me! ARCycling@gmail.com I'm pretty nice in emails even if I seem mean here.

Well that was a bunch of depressing crap wasn't it? How about for some good information and some gifs?!

First of all, review return rate is now up to 26%!! Up from 18% in December! That's awesome! Happy Muppet gif time!
Just an FYI, when we get to 1000 ARCycled books I might just die. Might. Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04703679346505997769noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-15331970980786755352013-03-03T21:35:00.000-05:002013-03-04T17:48:10.415-05:00Inside the ARCycling StudioYou might think this going to be a slightly egotistical post, like I'm over here going, 'oh, ah, look at the insane system I've created and how well it works, I am so great', but more often than not, I fail at something. But really this post is to take you inside ARCycling to understand what utter madness happens every week.

First I'm going to explain the spreadsheets. All eleven billion of them. Seriously. I can't even explain all of them at once, I have to break them into the different groups of spreadsheets.

Let's start with Donator spreads:

Donation intake form spreadsheet - oddly enough, this is the newest of spreadsheets and yet the first mentioned. When you submit a book here, it goes directly to that form. Where it sits until I manually add the donation books to two more forms (below).

Donator Master spreadsheet - Books from the above spread get added here, same information, but this time grouped by donation week and then by donator's name. This is vital on the Donator end, it tells me who needs to know where to send their books. It also tracks how long books have been sitting unclaimed by the masses.

The List spreadsheet - This is the master 'show' list of current books available for the week. This is spreadsheet you see every Sunday afternoon.

Then there are the Requester spreadsheets:
This is the fun part. This is what you see happens every Sunday.

Weekly Request spreadsheet - When you use the form to request a book on those fateful Sundays, they go into their own spreadsheet that is changed out weekly. Requests are timestamped and it's first come, first served. 'Winning' requests are highlighted and books gotten are written to the side for easy reference to us. Then they are deleted from The List.

Suspended (Time Out) spreadsheet - This is kind of a specialty spreadsheet. It's Lili's territory. When someone gets a book, their name is checked to see if it's on here. If it is, REQUEST DENIED. If Lili's working that session, she will politely email you, telling you are still on Time Out or what have you. If Jennifer's by her lonesome, not so much.

Requester Master spreadsheet - If you request and get a book, your information is manually transcribed from the Weekly Request spread to here. This dictates absolutely everything on the Requester end. It's what Lili works off of to manage the Suspended spread and tells where the books from the Donator Master spread go.

Then there are the emails.
For Requesters, confirmation emails go out go out within 20 minutes of start (which is a breeze), but it's the Donator emails that take the longest. In order to email, 2 different spreadsheets have to be consulted. First, the Donator Master spread to get who donated what books, then the Weekly Request spread to get the information on where to send them. Combine that with a 3rd open tab for an email in which to copy and paste the information of both. Then of course, crossing off the people who have been emailed.

During an average ARCycling session, I have about 6-7 tabs open, not including my Pandora channel that keeps me sane. As crazy as it sounds, it's easier to have a million tabs open then to have to go searching around in Google Docs to find a spread in the ARCycling crunch time.

From start to finish, it takes about 3 hours to prep, have the session, then all of the emails and "clean up" aka fixing spreadsheets and organizing the ARCycling inbox, which can get insane. Labels and folders, if you've never used them and have a lot of emails, I highly recommend.

And to top it all off, I keep ALL OF THE INFORMATION ever. Each one of these spreadsheets are forever long because nothing ever gets deleted. I did have to start a new Donator sheet for 2013 because it was getting too long. All this saving helps me track lost requests, lost donors, lost kittens and all-in-all stalk the crap out of everyone.
Me:

Does your brain hurt yet?
Wondering how in Tartarus we do this every Sunday? Me, let's just say I've mastered the keystrokes ⌘A, ⌘C, ⌘V and ⌘Z like nobody's business. Seriously, at times I do them so fast I often mistype them.

Anyway, now I think you guys know why after an ARCycling session I love to hang out and post stupid gifs. Cause me brain dead. And that's why mistakes happen from time to time. Though I *think* I'm getting better at that? Worst/ best part is that before the Weekly Request forms, this was even worse. Seriously. Led to lots of drinking.

Okay, not really. I'm a good girl. Kinda.

But seriously. I think this gif is the spirit animal for ARCycling.

I remember you! And then I got all...

I feel like I need to update you guys on my life and what it means for you and ARCycling.

Well, I went to LA Oscar weekend, thinking 'oh, this will be cool!' then we learned the friend we were staying with lives off Hollywood Blvd which is cool, normally, but labyrinthine come Oscar weekend.

No, I didn't see any celebs. Unless you count going to Billy Boyd's band's show. In case you aren't as old as I am, he was Pippin in Lord of the Rings. You know, this dude, the hobbit joke cracker.

Or for a sultryier Pippin...

Either way, yes, it was awesome, he sings beautifully, you should check his band out! It's Beecake. Perfect if you love the Scottish accent!

Anyway, all that driving (22-24 hours solid one way) and... we didn't find nothing.

Big ole WAH WAH for us. So, as of this very moment, I still have no official plans to move to La La land and ARCycling will continue as normal.

I guess that's really all I had to say! An excuse to say hi and use some gifs!

So hang tight and...

So, I'm really sorry to say that there will be no ARCycling tomorrow Sunday the 24th of February, 2013.

Why, you may ask? Well, Jennifer's out house hunting in Los Angeles, so I was supposed to be the only one running ARCycling this week. However, I think we all know that I can totally handle it and all would be well! But I've been really sick lately. And by that I mean that I've not been part of the land of the living for the past 6 days and to get over this huge sickness my doctors have decided to knock me out with medications until tomorrow. Alas, there will be no ARCycling because my health is really important.

As Jennifer would say, I hope ya'll will understand.

DONATORS: All current donations will be pushed to next week.

REQUESTERS: All questions about when ARCycling is tomorrow on Twitter will be ignored. Neither Jennifer or myself are going to be near a computer because we have slightly more important things to worry about and I'd really love to rejoin the land of the living.

EVERYONE ON TWO WEEK TIME OUT: This week does not count towards two week time out. So, that means if you were to get off this week, you get off next week. If you were to get off next week, you actually get off the week after. Wherever you currently are in your time outs, push it back a week.

If you have any questions, we'll answer them during the week! I hope everyone is doing better than I am.
- LiliUnknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-13012333630769871392013-02-10T21:40:00.000-05:002013-02-10T21:47:00.456-05:00A giveaway you didn't even know was happening...So unless you're not reading my tweets/ posts or unless you're really not paying attention, I have hinted that when we hit 100 (or more) reviews in the Review Archive I was going to do a giveaway. Now that we've hit that goal (and more), it's time to spell this out a little more.

But! But! But! Lili mentioned something to me, (y'all should be thankful for her, even if she reams you on Time Out) she said I should thank the donors cause, well, without them, this program would have died as soon as it started (how I thought it would happen!).

My reaction:

Then:

THEN. We hit 500 (+) followers and that kind of sealed the deal.

So all of that led to this: (sorry, this is not a gif, but you might recognize the closet space!)

WHAT IS IN IT?!?!?!?!?
I DON'T KNOW!!!
Actually, I do, but I'm pretending I don't.
The better part is that YOU don't know. And you're not gonna know.

You:

Yeah, I said it.

Here's what's going to happen:
Three prizes. (Mysterious box x3 - Jennifer didn't get enough boxes in time for the picture)
Three winners.
A Russian roulette of giveaways.

*I sifted through a lot of disturbing entries for Russian roulette. You're lucky I found this.

Unmarked Box 1 will go to one of 100 (and some) reviewers listed here: http://arcycling.blogspot.com/p/review-archive.html
That much has been obvious for a while. Every review is one entry.

Unmarked Box 2 will go to a random donor who has donated over 3 books.

Unmarked Box 3 will go to a random GFC follower since we broke 500 followers.

Now. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU ARE STILL WONDERING:
WHAT IS *IN* THOSE BOXES?!
Well, I'll give you this much:
1. Each box has 12 books (blend of hardcover and paperback, new and older).
2. Each box is primarily YA with a balance of genres.
3. While most are ARCs, there are finished copies (both paperback and hardcover) in both boxes.
4. Most these came from my personal collection, cuts, etc because I still have WAY too many books.

So what's super-di-duper unique about this giveaway?
THE BALLOTS ARE ALREADY IN.

More audience reaction shots:

Me:

Means this is like the SAT, you go in knowing what you know. It's not something you cram for, this is an accumulation. Which is this. Your entry (or lack-of entry) is already in. As of this second, no more donations will get you an entry. They will count to the NEXT goal giveaway. Whenever that will be.

Believe me, this saves me a lot of kerfuffle. No fussin' or fightin' or Rafflecopter or nothin'. It saves me even more kerfuffle that I already have my winners picked and going to announce them... right... now...

And now to end this on a gif that made me laugh for like, 8 hours.
Really, it's the falling guitar and the completely uncaring cat that kills me. I mean, it doesn't even look over!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com53tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-73087448524478577122013-02-02T17:14:00.001-05:002013-02-02T17:14:52.679-05:00A fireside chat. So, it's happened. Through the mouth of a friend I had to hear about someone hating on my lovely little program. The hate in and of itself, I don't mind. Hey, things had been going too smoothly. My ego was getting over-stroked. However, while I won't drag their name in here like they did me, I would like to address their argument. And since this is a pretty serious post, I am going to lighten it with as many gifs as I could make sense of. As always.

What they say:
ARCs should never be distributed to others than who they were intended for by the publisher. Ever. Like, ever, ever. So if you don't keep them, they should be destroyed. And we are wrong and ignorant for doing this.

My response:
Point #1
Okay, okay, okay, let's start simple. Imagine for a second that some huge blogger, who has been blogging for years, were to keep every ARC ever. I imagine it would be something like this:

*Yes, I realize this is not a gif. Sorry. No gif of something like this exists.

Yeah, rooms like this make us book nerds (theoretically) ecstatic. But here's the downright, honest truth. Ain't nobody got space for that. What about a book you read and were totally MEH about? *I* don't keep it. Why? I'm not gonna read it again! I'd rather clear it off for a book I love.*
*I can't speak for everyone, but if I read an ARC, love it, I go and buy the book. Cause it looks prettier on my shelf, they last longer than ARCs and it supports the author/ publisher. So there.

Let's just agree that keeping every book you read (even if you don't want it) is insane. I read over 100 books a year, I'd be dead under the weight of them if I kept them all. Enter factors of earthquakes or fires and deadest dead that ever deaded.

Point #2
As per unnamed person, if you have you've ever gotten an ARC from a publisher and given it away on your blog (to anyone), then you are on the naughty list. Which means like 90% of bloggers are on the naughty list already. Which makes me think we all need to get together and have a big ole bad kids party.

And, uh, not to point out the insanely obvious, but publishers aren't stupid. They aren't unaware of the happenings of what we do on our little Blogger and Word Press-run sites. They know we do giveaways. If it was a problem, we would have heard about instances by now. Just saying.

And for the record, I've never used Amazon Vine. Honestly, I'd never even heard of it before. I also hate Amazon and won't use it if it can at all be avoided, but that's an entirely different story.

The day the blogging community stops all giveaways, maybe unnamed person will have a point, until then, I am going to disregard this as ridiculous as Ptolemaic epicycles in the 21st century.

Point #3
This is a big baddie point. But it's true. Ugly, ugly truth.
I know people who sell ARCs. The chain Half Price Books is a used book store around Texas and other areas and I see ARCs there ALL. THE. TIME. Specific case: I saw Malinda Lo's Adaptation (9/12) there all the way back in April. I've heard cases of librarians selling them when they do their sales of extra books cause they can't actually use them and they get too many. There are even those bloggers that sell them on eBay.
So, all of this is happening and yet I'm getting ragged on for spending my own money to mail them out while others (many others) don't give a flip about the no-sell thing?

Me:

Me at the haterade:

I try not to cuss here, but I feel like if I am going to offend people's sensibilities, it's going to be with such a classic teen film as this. Plus, it perfectly illustrates my thinking.

But, seriously, attack them first and make them stop, then come back to me.

Point #4
What unnamed person would (I guess) like me to do would be to contact every publisher for every title I ARCycle.

Are you cracked?
First of all, by the time most of the ARCs get to me they are "expired" which means they are already out. So the chance of "leaking" is minimal.
Now I feel is a good time to bring up how expensive ARCs are to produce. They actually cost more than finished hardbacks. Didn't know that? Well, they do. I've always felt it's ridiculous that a book that expensive gets used once. But if 2 bloggers read it, then it's like $10 per read, times the amount of people their stellar review and go out and buy it from that.
I am both a bookseller and a reviewer and through reviewing and hand selling, I've earned my weight in the ARC world and anyone to try and tell me otherwise is going to see what a fierce ginger I can be. Oddly, this is something unnamed person mentioned in their post... so... there's that awkward piece of common ground.

Summary:
Here's the wicked truth: ultimately, I don't really care what unnamed person thinks. I'm going to keep rocking it like I do.

*Yes, this is a Percy Jackson gif. Finally having a reason to use it makes my life.

If a publisher should contact me about a title or even their whole line of books, then sure. I'm respectful enough to not take that title(s) anymore.

What frustrates me is that this unnamed person bad-mouthed me behind my back. If you're going to spread around incorrect or incomplete information about this program, have the guts to do it to my face. Oh, and don't condescend to me like I'm some noob. I've been in this community for years, even if this blog is new. Any future whining or finger-pointing at me or this blog project from bloggers who need to deflate their britches is gonna get a

in response. Yeah, no seriously. I have this gif saved. I will use it all of the time.

Lastly, to end my essay off, I remind you this: I provide an option to the masses on how to get rid of their unwanted books. I don't go out of my way to acquire these ARCs to pass out to peeps. Mainly 'cause I don't got time for that. We get what we get and are grateful for it. No more. There's no wink-wink-nudge-nudge-secret handshake in back alleys to get them. If you don't agree with this project, don't participate and go burn your ARCs in defiance. I don't care. They are yours to do with what you will. Keep that in mind for the people donating here. This is a judge-free zone. As well as a drama-free zone.

And now... peace out.
It actually is. Many, many, MANY moons ago when the internet was new and young and website software didn't exist, I learned HTML.

Does this mean I am a computer software specialist? No. Do I have a computer science degree? No. Though I aced my computer science class in college and have dealt with more software and hardware issues than I ever care to admit.

So, today's lesson: Blog Buttons.
I've seen many, many and many, many have been wrong. No seriously. Out of everyone on the Donator page, I've seen like five dead-on perfect ones. Really, the code you need for your actual blog button is very simple.

Codes you need:
<xmp> <- this is the code for a link.
<- this is an image code.
</xmp>
For a blog button you are combining them:
<xmp></xmp>
For your super basic blog button, that is it. That is all the code you need. MAKE SURE your a href tag encloses the img src tag. This makes the image a link.

Now, let's go into fancier things and what they mean:
<xmp></xmp>
A link tag with a target="_blank" means the link will open a new window or tab.

Now, with the img src tag you can do lots of things, most of them useless.
<xmp>
</xmp>
What do all of these mean?
Height - pretty obvious, the height of the image IN PIXALS. Not percent.
Width - same as above, but for width. IN PIXALS. Not percent
Border - I feel like this is an archiac thing. I can't remember the time I even saw a link border on a image. Either way, if you really want the code in there, set it to 0.
Alt - this is text that will pop up if your image doesn't load. Again, this seems like archaic code. If you really want it in there, set it your blog's name and blog button, or whatever. Most people won't see this anyway.

You can also add:
<xmp>
</xmp>
if you wish, but for my donator page, I always delete them.

Now, lastly, since I opened this topic, might as well finish it off.
Right now (if you don't already have a blog button up) you might be thinking 'well, Jennifer, this is all well and good, but how do I get that nifty little box up with all of this marvelous code in it?' For this, I will screen cap from my good friend Lili's blog.

What you mean is this:

That box is called a text area.
<xmp>

</xmp>
Looks familiar, eh? Notice that rows and cols thing? Rows mean the horizontal space seen. Cols means columns. That code right there is the exact code for my blog button, so that's what those numbers look like in real life. They can be changed to whatever.
In conclusion, if you use some web generator and it gives you think with divs and spans and it's 80 lines long, no. That is wrong. Delete all that junk until you have:
<xmp></xmp>
That's it, folks.

That being said... a few things.

Donors: Please, please, please, please, please, please, please only offer up books you can, ya know, mail out. At least, eventually (a month time frame should really be doable). Because when I tell someone they're going to get a book then they don't they are sad panda when they don't get it and I am sad panda when they don't get it (not to mention it really messes with my stats). And worst of all, I keep having to give reasons as to why it hasn't been mailed, when really, I have none. All around everyone is this:

The last bullet point is actually so important, I'm repeating it. DONORS PLEASE ONLY OFFER BOOKS YOU CAN MAIL WITHIN A TIMELY FASHION.

Okay, new things. Requesters! This one is for you. We give books to active bloggers. But, what does that mean? Simple. 5-8 reviews a month is passable. If you have several reviewers per blog, then more, usually.

Another one for Requesters. (New Requesters, mainly) The books on here are not "spare copies for grabs". Or whatever. These books are for review. They are not books for you to get just to giveaway for your blog or just to horde ARCs. No. No no no. If you give them away on your blog AFTER you review them, then that's kosher. But (for example) if I see you've already read and reviewed them, then no. This really shouldn't be an issue, but alas. It is now an issue that's come up.

Okay. That's all for this post, I think.
Whenever I do informational posts, I feel like this.

Okay, I'm not that serious. Maybe more like this.

So, guess what happens Sunday?
Guess.
GUESS!

ARCYCLING! IT STARTS AGAIN!

Yup, welcome back to gifs. Nope, that wasn't just a 2012 thing. We've hit over 450 followers with my stick figures and bizarre humor, so we're gonna keep that going of course.

Anyway, back to the point (is there ever one?). Let's go over a few easy peasy reminders for how breaks work.

Yes, so we've been off the last two weeks, but as far as ARCycling is concerned, those 2 weeks never happened.
So, on December 16th, did you:
- Get two books? Great. You're on Time Out for the next two weeks.
- Get one book? Cool. This Sunday is your last chance to get another book before Time Out.
- Were on Time Week Time Out Week 1 when break started. You got one more week of Time Out.
- Were free and clear when break started. Well, by golly, you're free and clear now!

Now, for some more fun news!
Slowly, but surely I've been watching my Review Archive number rise and this makes me a happy pig-tailed girl. So I said to myself, "Kyle," (no, JK, but if you get this very small 90s TV show reference, let's be best friends) "Jennifer, how can you reward people who have been awesome AND encourage more peeps to get reviews in?"

Sending out gifts would be uh, expensive, besides what do I even have? Bookmarks? No. Boring. But then I thought of something. And when we reach 100 reviews in the Review Archive, Jennifer might just have a giveaway to only those reviewers on the Review Archive. And it might just be one entry per review. Which might mean that if you've submitted 10 reviews, you get 10 entries. Which might mean you have a 1 in 10 chance of winning. Which might be awesome. Jennifer might not know the exact prize right now, but it might involve a big randomized box of books/ ARCs to the winner. Might.
So, chew over that might-be situation.

And for those of you who are sitting on books to be reviewed, chew on that as well. And don't mind me as I have Fry stare at you...
We understand that it's hard to grasp, so I've decided to explain it clearly on a post. For now on if people ask, they'll just be directed to this post. While our initial explanation seems to cause mass confusion, my in-depth one seems to be understandable. We hope this clears up any confusion for you with all of the possible scenarios.

So...say we're starting this in the first week of a month. Here's how every possible ARCycling scenario can work out:

2 books in Week 1

Awesome! You got two books in one week! You are now banned for week two and week three (two weeks for the time out) and you can request again week four.

1 book in Week 1 and 1 book in Week 2

Woo! Look at you! You still got two books, but this time it was over the course of two weeks! You are on time out for week three and week four and can request again in the metaphorical week five, meaning week one of next month. Enjoy the books!

1 Book in Week 1 and no book in Week 2

Bummer! You didn't get your second book in week two, but your time out has still begun. Once you get book one, you have one week to get book two. No matter what, time out starts during week two, book or no book. So you are banned week three and week four and you can request again in the metaphorical week five, meaning week one of the next month. Why is this? Well, this is the only way we can keep track of things. We've giving you the opportunity to grab two books, and it is up to you to make it happen. There is only so much we can do in the name of fairness without driving ourselves insane with dates that are hard to follow.

Well, I got one book in week 1 and didn't get a book in week 2, but I want a book in week 3 because you said we can get 2 books!

Believe it or not, we hear this a lot, so I want to qualify this. This excuse will never work out for you. Yes, you do get the chance to get 2 books, but this is 2 books in the same week or consecutive weeks. You are misunderstanding our rules. If we let you jump around weeks, the dates will get too confusing for us. We'll start missing dates, letting others take several books when they shouldn't by sheer accident, and we'll go slightly insane because we can no longer simply keep track of things. This system is tolerable for us and fair to you. So, please, be happy with it. We're getting you books! Enjoy them!

I'm on temporary ban because I got too many books and didn't review any of them, but I've reviewed them all now, so when can I request again?

Good question! Once we have all the reviews tweeted or e-mailed to us, you can request at the next session and then you will go back into any of the two week time out scenarios mentioned above instead of your temporary overall suspension. Review the books and you won't have to go to temporary suspension round two!

I genuinely hope that two week time out is more comprehensible for everyone. Most people had trouble grasping bullet points three and four. If there are any remaining questions or things that you believe that we have yet to discuss, please tell us and we'll add it. Don't hesitate to e-mail us if you don't understand one of these points. We want to explain this to you so that you can keep track of your requests for yourself now instead of having to check up with us every week. For now on, all requests about suspensions will simply be responded to with this link.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-43602939029410594272012-12-09T20:51:00.001-05:002012-12-09T20:51:55.075-05:00Christmas break and coal in stockings.Let's start with the coal in stockings thing. It's the less fun and more mandatory part of this post.

I've been over this before and for some of you Requesters, this ain't an issue. But for others *eyes the masses of the internet*, more of an issue. ARCycling was started to pass around REVIEW BOOKS for more REVIEW. So far we've really mastered the 'pass around REVIEW BOOKS' part. Less so on the 'for more REVIEW' part. Comprende?

Now for some easy math. I think this was covered in like elementary school? Percentages? Let's take the total number of books we had ARCycled up until two weeks ago (11/25) which 356 books. Now I don't keep exact dates of when reviews come in, but let's be nice to ourselves and say that we had 63 then (we didn't). So 63 reviews for 356 books. Even before I do the division, it looks bad, yeah? And rounding in the more optimistic numbers, that's 18%.

18%!!!!

That's pretty bad over several months of being up. I mean, I have nothing to compare it to, but I'd LIKE for it be closer to 50%. I mean yeesh.

So, like any good company, we've come up with something to hopefully counteract this. Requesters, if you've gotten 5 or more books from ARCycling and haven't reviewed one, you're going to be temporarily banned until all of the reviews pop up. But this is easy to counteract! Review the books! I personally don't care if you say the book was such crap it isn't worth mopping a Taco Bell bathroom floor with! I'm a non-partial party here. I earn no money or popularity off these reviews. I just like reviews! That being said I know the "I don't like writing negative reviews" or "I pointed a gun to my own head and still couldn't finish it" or "I haven't gotten it yet", etc reasons. The 5:1 ratio still exists is time limitless. Especially the not gotten it. No worries if you haven't gotten it yet.

Ideally, we'd like for you to review every title you get. Even if it takes a while. Or you hire your baby sister to write something (though intelligible writing is always good for both you and me!). When you hit your 5:1 ratio, Lili will email you, wagging her finger and letting you know this is just a temporary ban! Temporary! This will also be added to the rules page for Requesters!
If this review ratio doesn't get better, we'll lower the ratio to 3:1. So there. If you regularly submit reviews, you're in no danger!

Now for festive things!!

So, if you are still in school, you know the beauty that is getting away from responsibility of work, etc. for a few glorious weeks and doing festive things. Then you grow up, get slammed into the real world and have to work and festivity is only something you see other people doing.
Or at least, that's my life.

In order to recapture that a little bit, we'll be closing ARCycling for the Sunday before Christmas and the Sunday before New Years. I know this has been mentioned before, but this is a little more of an official post on it.

That information again: ARCycling will be closed December 23 and 30th.

Now here's the very, very, very, very important thing to keep in mind: the closing does NOT count towards Two Week Time Out. TWTO only works when there are, you know, books moving. If no books move, nothing moves. SO, if you get 2 books on December 16th (last session before closing), you will be freed from Two Time Out on January 20th.

Make sense? Yeah? Okay, now for some random cat images!

And finally, for the festive season...
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-28105949950278807132012-11-25T18:59:00.001-05:002012-12-02T19:04:12.185-05:00ARCycling Secret Santa Update!Hey, everyone! Just wanted to tell you that Friday is when the ARCycling Secret Santa Donation form is closing. If you still want to participate, now's the time to do so! Enter here.

Those who agree to participate should expect an e-mail around December 14th with where to send their books and should be prepared to get them out ASAP so that they can arrive in time for the holidays. I also want to point something out: those of you who donate older books, you are most likely getting older books in return. Those who donate ARCs, you are most likely getting ARCs in return. We're trying to go for equality with this.

Remember, ARCycling is closed during the Sundays that span over Christmas and New Years. This is the replacement of ARCycling those 2 weeks. All time out's are temporarily frozen that week. If you are put on time out during the last ARCycling session before the holidays (December 16) you are not off of time out until January 20th since your time out spans the 6th and the 13th.

Don't be afraid to ask any other questions for both Santa and the temporary ARCycling shut down for the holidays! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-20039998046475628462012-11-23T18:13:00.000-05:002012-11-23T18:14:42.318-05:00Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the technology.*Oh my gods, none of you even get that reference do you?

So, you've all seen my Hunger Games post, right? If not, here. You're welcome. Who doesn't love an adapted internet meme? Anyway, that would happen WEEKLY. And it was madness. Seriously, if it hadn't been a security breach, I would have screenshot that inbox and you guys could SEE the 45 emails in 15 seconds. No kidding. And all for the same book that went to fastest Tribute in .02 seconds.

Now let me set the scene for how Jennifer came up with a new idea. (It's kinda funny.)
I was going in for a medical procedure (nothing major) and I needed to be put under anesthesia, which means no food for 8 hours, but I did 12 hours. And I had just woken up and I was very, very hungry and there was no coffee in my hands, which a bad deal always. And I was talking to my dad (who was driving me) about ARCycling. Yes. To my dad. About ARCycling. Y'all are in my life more than I care to admit.

Anyway, moving on, I was saying something about it (I don't even remember what!), but I said the word 'form'. And then I had one of those staring-off-into-the-distance epiphanies, but really I was staring at a stoplight and my words entirely trailed off and I had a dumb look on my face as I tried to think 'Would that work? Could I make that work?'

It was followed by a short 'yes' as my brain supplied supplement rules, etc.
Then followed by a 'JENNIFER. WHY HAVE YOU NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE?!??!?!?! FAIL.'

Then I madly tweeted Lili, hoping that all of the medical stuff wouldn't somehow leak this absolutely vital idea from my scattered brain. (I'm a writer, this happens far too much - so I record ideas when they happen.)

Anyway, once I was coherent enough, I spelled this idea out. Here's what is in, in my favorite bullet point format.

NO MORE EMAILS FOR REQUESTS.

Emails, tweets, messenger pigeons and Iris messages will not accepted. If you got the last reference, let's be friends.

Form now!

Still first come, first served.

But now with by-the-second timestamps. This helps YOU. BELIEVE ME.

You can request up to your TOP 5 books from the List.

Unfortunately, past that, you're gonna be a little SOL. Sorry. But we don't want any copy and pasting of the List because that's just ridiculous, guys.

You will ONLY get an email, if you get the book. Therefore, no email confirmation = no book.

I really hated writing the "sorry, you've requested like, 8 books and didn't get a single one" emails, so this eliminates that.

Email confirmations will still happen as soon as you get the book. Or a minute after. You know, they do take a few seconds to write.

They will be short and sweet. Probably titled something like "ARCycling confirmation" and will be coming from the ARCycling email.

If 15-20 minutes goes by and you don't get an confirmation email, you probably didn't get anything you requested. *sadface*

And because I know you guys like to prep your emails and speed type the titles, the form will go up before the List does by about 15 minutes.

AND TO MAKE IT EVEN EASIER, the form submission will be on the same page as the List. Below it, most likely. So just ONE PAGE for all of you.

Just a little note on how the top 5 requests will work. Let's give you an example! You request the following: Every Day, Future of Us, The Innocents, Rockoholic, and Fever.
But by the time you submitted, Every Day, Future of Us were gone.
So you'd get The Innocents and Rockoholic.
*This is an example of someone not on Two Week Time Out or only having the option of getting one book.

And for poops and giggles, this is a sample of what the form will look like. If you can read it. Don't try to fill this out. It's an image, it won't go anywhere.

The form will be remade every week and have a new theme. Honestly, I expect to use every single one of Google Docs form themes because they are ridiculous and so am I.
Anyway, so who's excited?! I am!! I am a lot! Mainly because I don't have to go OH MAH GODS, EMAILS every week now!

So a few happy dance gifs to end this horridly long post? I think so.

And here's just a confusing one for you...

So, thoughts on this?!
Now before you go all 'BAH. NEW SYSTEM?!' on me, let me reiterate how much easier this will be on us. It will. It takes HOURS (no, really) to go through the emails and this will all but eliminate that. This will make us happy. Which is something you want. You want books and for us to be happy. *nods*Unknownnoreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362766549382233.post-76978955386521651832012-11-17T22:19:00.002-05:002012-11-22T15:36:07.503-05:00ARCycling Secret Santa! So, Jennifer and I were originally planning to close ARCycling over the Sundays the evolved around the holiday break because, face it, it’s the holidays. But I wanted to be able to celebrate the holidays with our lovely followers somehow, so we came up with ARCycling Secret Santa! Essentially, all you have to do is this... fill out the form below with your address, the books you’re contributing, and your preferred genres. For every book you donate, you’ll get a book in the mail as a gift. Say you donate 4 books, you’ll get 4 back!

By filling out the form below, you are agreeing to

Ship the book(s) wherever your Secret Santa lives within the US

Unfortunately, we have to keep this open to US only. Please be aware that this does not count as an ARCycling week and this is there simply to ensure that everyone can get a book for the holidays! So no one will go on Two Week Time Out for this! If you’re already on time out while this occurs, these do not count as part of your time out and your time out will resume once we are back from the break. Also, know that we’ll do our best to get you a book that we think fits your description of genres. We really want you to enjoy what you get. You can link me to your review archive or Goodreads in the genres question if you want a better chance at getting a book on your TBR shelf.

ARCycling will be closed December 23rd and December 30th. These dates do not count towards time outs. All destination e-mails will be sent out December 14th and 15th so that the books can arrive before or around Christmas. Individuals who commit to this and do not follow through with their commitment will not be looked upon favorably during future ARCycling sessions.

Do you want to participate in Secret Santa? ;)

Also, keep in mind that we are still looking for regular donations for ARCycling weekly as well. These do not count towards our weekly sessions that are still open for the first half of December and will pick back up again in January.
